AIS data is often embedded in and VDO sentences. Version 4.11 clarifies fragment numbering and multi-sentence message reassembly.

Three months earlier, in a windowless conference room in Geneva, a dozen engineers from the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) were fighting a quiet war.

Version 4.11’s expanded GNSS support was arguably its most significant innovation. Prior versions had primarily focused on GPS (GP) with limited support for GLONASS. With Version 4.11, the standard became truly multi-constellation capable, paving the way for more accurate, reliable positioning in challenging environments such as urban canyons, deep harbors, and high-latitude regions where a single GNSS system might have limited satellite visibility.

It further refined how GNSS data (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo) is packaged, ensuring faster position updates and better handling of multi-constellation data.

The standard defines a wide range of “sentences,” each consisting of a talker ID, a sentence formatter, comma-separated data fields, and a checksum for error detection. Each sentence begins with a $ delimiter and ends with a carriage return and line feed ( <CR><LF> ). Sentences are limited to a maximum of 82 ASCII characters.
