The film adapts Aron Ralston's real-life memoir, Between a Rock and a Hard Place . In April 2003, Ralston was exploring an isolated slot canyon in Bluejohn Canyon, Utah, without informing anyone of his itinerary. An unstable boulder dislodged, trapping his right arm against the canyon wall. Over the next five days, Ralston faced dehydration, hypothermia, and intense hallucinations. He ultimately made the difficult decision to break his own bones and use a dull multi-tool to amputate his forearm to free himself.
